Football is a violent game, and Cardinals safety Rashad Johnson had quite a disturbing event happen to him on Sunday during Arizona’s battle down in New Orleans against the Saints.

According to Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic, Johnson lost part of his left middle finger while he was tackling Darren Sproles on a punt return.  Following the play he went to the sideline and reportedly took off his glove, only to find that part of his finger was still inside of it.

According to Somers, Johnson was taken to the hospital to have his finger repaired during the second half of the Cardinals 31-7 loss to the Saints and doctors shaved the bone on his finger and repaired what they could, but the safety lost the finger all the way down to the first knuckle.

There’s no timetable yet on Johnson’s return, but it was a bad day overall for the Cardinals yesterday.  They reportedly lost starting outside linebackers Sam Acho and Lorenzo Alexander for the season, and also had some additional tragedy with nose tackle Dan Williams’ father was killed this weekend in a car accident while he was driving from Memphis (where Williams is from) to New Orleans to see his son play.  His sister and mother were also in the car and reportedly survived, and both were hospitalized in Jacksonville Mississippi, which is where the accident apparently occurred.

Definitely a heartbreaking story.
